Subject: Senior Assisted Living on Orcas Island
The Need: Looking at our age demographics over the past
27 years, we can see our population not only growing older, but a dramatic
increase in our 55-64 age group due to migration into the county. Since 2000, nearly half of our total growth
has been in this age group.
What
does this mean? Within 10 years, this
will increase the over 65 population on Orcas Island to at least 2,000
residents.
But,
at the same time, the work force that is needed to provide services for our
senior residents is declining.
Services
are already in short supply and costs are increasing.
This
is the most serious challenge that we face in providing for the needs of our
senior citizens.
What
can be done?
