To examine the implications of an aging population and the unique geography of Orcas Island and to assist existing and future organizations to meet the needs of seniors.
We are continuing to get a good understanding of the existing services for seniors and defining how to best meet the needs of seniors on Orcas Island. We have assisted the Lahari project in the transition from a church to a charity, have implemented new bylaws and articles of incorporation, and have assumed responsibility for the property.
The mission of this project is to provide research products and organizational assistance to public and private organizations which seek to meet the needs of senior residents of Orcas Island.
Orcas Island has seen a dramatic decline in the 25 to 44 age group from 30.3% in 1990 (close to the national norm) to 19.4% in 2005. Meanwhile, Orcas Island has seen an increase in the 45 to 64 age group from 25.4% in 1990 to 39.6% in 2005. The consequences of this significant change in island demographics indicates an aging population (nearly twice the national average approaching retirement age) and a declining work force that will be needed to provide services to that aging population. At the same time, the geography of the island makes delivery of services, especially medical services, difficult. It is already very difficult and expensive to acquire fundamental home maintenance services and some island residents are now 1/2 hour from emergency medical services.
These demographic changes suggest that within 10 years the number of seniors on Orcas Island over the age of 65 will double to approximately 2,000. Today, nearly half of all residents are over 50 years of age.
While most senior citizens would like to remain on the island, it is likely that many will leave, either because they cannot afford the increasing costs of services or out of fear of the unavailability of emergency medical services when needed.
The following organizations are presently addressing some of the needs of our senior citizens:
The Orcas Island Senior Center and the Orcas Senior Services Council
Operates the Orcas Island Senior Center and Senior service programs associated with the Senior Center.
Lahari, a volunteer organization which operates Lahari Hospice and provides in-home care for elderly residents of Orcas Island through Hearts and Hands.
